One Step Gel Polish Combines Base, Color and Top Coat—Not Every Step
One step gel polish skips separate base and top coats—not prep or curing. Compare 3-in-1 application, lamp instructions, wear claims and removal.

One step gel polish combines the base coat, color and top coat in one formula. It reduces the number of products you apply; it does not mean one coat, no nail preparation or no lamp. For example, Le Mini Macaron describes its polish as both “1-step” and “3-in-1,” but instructs users to apply multiple layers and cure them under its LED lamps. Le Mini Macaron product instructions
The useful distinction is one bottle doing three jobs, rather than a manicure completed in one action.
What changes compared with a separate-base-and-top system?
Gelish’s conventional soak-off system requires Foundation Base Gel, color and Top It Off. Its Top It Off also needs cleansing after curing. By contrast, Glamnails Professional’s One Step Gel instructions omit a separate base coat, top coat and final cleanse. These are examples of specific systems—not rules for every bottle labeled gel. | Part of the manicure | One-step / 3-in-1 gel | Separate-base-and-top gel |
|---|---|---|
| Nail preparation | Still required | Still required |
| Base coat | Incorporated into the formula | Applied separately |
| Color | May need multiple cured coats | May need multiple cured coats |
| Top coat | Incorporated; an extra coat may be optional | Applied separately |
| Final cleansing | Check whether the formula is no-wipe | Depends on the top coat |
| Removal | Follow the exact product’s instructions | Follow the complete system’s instructions |
“No-wipe” is not the same as “one-step.” It describes whether a cured finish needs its sticky residue cleansed away, not whether the color replaces a base and top coat. See our guide to no-wipe gel top coats.
How to apply one-step gel polish
Use the bottle’s directions and the manufacturer-specified lamp. A practical sequence is:
- Prepare the nails. Shape them and remove dust and oils as directed. An all-in-one formula does not eliminate this preparation.
- Apply a very thin first coat. Keep gel off the skin and cuticles. Clean up accidental skin contact before curing.
- Cure that coat. Use the specified lamp and time—not a universal “gel” setting.
- Apply and cure each subsequent coat. Build color with the number and thickness of layers the product permits, rather than trying to get full coverage in one heavy layer.
- Finish according to the formula. A separate top coat or cleanse should not be assumed necessary.
Le Mini Macaron’s application guide specifies an ultra-thin first layer and gives different curing times for its lamps: at least 30 seconds with Le Mini or 60 seconds with Le Maxi. Glamnails Professional specifies 60 seconds under an LED lamp for its One Step Gel. These timings illustrate why the product-and-lamp instructions matter; they are not interchangeable recommendations or permission to use any LED lamp. Fewer bottles do not remove gel’s allergy precautions. The British Association of Dermatologists warns that uncured nail products contacting skin and insufficient curing can increase allergy risk, particularly with home kits. It advises using the recommended lamp and avoiding direct skin contact. British Association of Dermatologists guidance
The UK cosmetics trade association CTPA’s 2019 guidance also cautions that you cannot tell whether gel is fully cured simply by looking at it. CTPA safe-use guidance
Should you add a base or top coat anyway?
Not automatically. Doing so turns the manicure into a multi-product system, and compatibility needs checking. Le Mini Macaron explicitly says a separate top coat is unnecessary, while offering its own Gel Shine Top Coat as an optional finish. That permission should not be extended to unrelated products or brands. Le Mini Macaron application guide
Wear and removal: what the shortcut does not promise
As of October 31, 2026, Le Mini Macaron advertises up to two weeks for its Cherry Red one-step polish; Gelish advertises up to 21 days for its separate-base-and-top system. These are manufacturer claims, not a controlled head-to-head comparison. They do not establish that every one-step formula wears less well—or equally well. Le Mini Macaron · Gelish
“One-step” does not mean peel-off removal either. Le Mini Macaron’s remover-kit instructions call for filing the coating’s surface, applying acetone-containing wraps for 15 minutes, then gently removing softened gel. Glamnails Professional gives a 5–10-minute acetone-wrapping interval for its product. Follow your own system’s removal directions rather than choosing the shorter time from another brand. Choose one-step gel if your priority is fewer bottles and fewer separate application stages. Before buying, confirm that the actual product says it replaces both base and top coat, names a compatible lamp and explains removal. Those details are more useful than “one-step” alone.
